| I loved the premise and the concept of this show, it had everything to be a good political/military fantasy. But it failed miserably on execution. One of the major secondary characters, Marine, is the main reason for that. She refuses to form an alliance with her former fiancé -they still love each other-, whores herself out to one of the most evil lords, commits war crimes -literally nukes a castle with a bio/chemical weapon equivalent in this world-, kills her own cousin. Just to name a few of her crimes. Now, this would all be fine, there are villains, they do evil things, right? Well, except she is still portrayed and treated as a good character by the rest of the main cast. Her golden retriever ex-fiancé who can't even hurt a fly still lover her and ends up marrying her. Theo and Siluca, the 2 main characters, who always fight against injustice, protect the commonfolk, and most importantly were very close to this bitch's cousin, who took them in, protected them and helped them out earlier. The cousin she killed. Yeah, these 2 also just forgive her, they even have their wedding the same time as her and her ex-fiancé. All these characters were well aware of all her crimes, and it goes against what they believe in and how they acted before. Legit, people who did less, got punished without a second thought by Theo earlier in the story. It just goes against what we see they do as characters and makes no sense how they just all accept her crimes like nothing. Hell, Theo and Siluca even had a friendly meeting with her a few days after her betrayal and murder of Villar, and a few weeks after her using chemical weapons on the castle. This was just so poorly written, and I am very sad about it, considering I loved the rest of the story, but I had to drop it from an 8/10 to a very generous 3/10, considering how big a part this plotline and character played. Terrible, nonsense writing. |

| Well, terrible nonsense writing came to my mind as well reading your post. Obvious jokes aside, I think your argument falls apart right away since she obviously isn't a villain, she just does what she thinks she has to to achieve her goals. But her goals aren't evil at the end of the day, so in my mind what she does doesn't make her a villain. She does the same as all the characters as you say, so why should they treat her badly or differently? That makes no sense when they all aware they do the same thing to achieve the same means. You bascially have your answer and then ignore it to try and fail to make some sort of argument about something I don't think this series hat such amazing writing overall, obviously there is quite a lot of "because it's a story" going on if you talk about the motivations and actions of the characters, but I don't think what you picked to criticise makes much sense. |

| @uselessDM how does she do the same as everyone else? Yes, they are in a war, but even in real life we have war crimes. Using bio/chemical weapons is one such thing, which she did, and nobody else used in the show. And also the other side wanted to offer peace several times, she was the one insisting to keep the war going. And from the POV of Theo and the rest, she also betrayed and killed someone they considered a friend, and they just completely accept all this, especially Theo who fights and cares for the peasants, is just not realistic. And I think looking at it as "she didn't consider herself as a villain, and her goal was good" is a really dangerous way of thinking, I'm sure many historical IRL figures we consider horrible today didn't consider themselves as villains, but they are nonetheless. |

The argument that Theo fights for the peasents isn't a great one either. He basically leads thousands of them to their death in battle as well. All the parties involved use what they have at their disposal to try to achieve their means at the end of the day. To be fair, it has been a while since I watched it so I might have forgot some of the things she does, so maybe she does worse things actually. |

| @uselessDM Yea, but that's how war is, IIRC most of them are loyal to him and fight willingly. There is nothing you can do about it. But marine comited several war crimes in the first half of the show, as I mentioned before. There are lines you should not cross even in war. Which, by itself is fine, we need villains, my issue with the writing is how she was not treated like a villain, even tho absolutely was to the opposition. |

Whther that justifies her actuons up for debatze of course, but that doesn't make her character bad automatically or that the other characters can't decide to forgive her. Also from what I remember she herself does think she is beyond redemption and is surprised that they forgive her. So in that case it would be strange to call her character shitty if the character itself makes sense. |

| @uselessDM Well, it felt really unrealistic to me. Idk if it's because it was rushed, and maybe it's better in the novels, but anyways, the adaptation should stand on its own and to me it did not feel like this was handled and written well at all. |

The ending felt pretty rushed from what I remember, so maybe the should have been more about her actions and whether the other characters should forgive her or not. I guess it would be interesting to see how the populace thinks about her compared to Theo who was popular even though he also lead many to his death. But of course most commoners probably wouldn't know about what she did in the war in any great detail. I suppose there is a lot left unsaid about her character. |

| yeah, this show's "muh diplomacy and politics" bs sucks. It tried so hard to be mature, brutally pragmatic and emotionally detached, that it actually succeeded and made the whole thing unlikable and tedious to watch, ironically, despite its dizziyng pace. From the very beginning, nothing she fucking did considering her goals made any fucking sense. Just remembering sours my mood, so thanks a bunch you fuck. I can't disagree with you. |

Although I enjoyed it a lot overall, I'm still not really sure why that war was even needed in the first place. I mean of course you have that scene at the beginning where things go wrong, but both leaders die in that scene, so I'm not sure how that leads to both fractions going to war with wach other when it seems pretty obvious that neither of them was the cause of it. To me it felt like the wedding could have gotten ahead as planned and all would be well. |

| Marrine is a tragic villain. The most important thing in the story is the Grancrest, which is basically all the power united under one banner. The first scene shows the attempt to achieve the Grancrest, through the marriage of Marrine and Alexis. It didn't work, and it got their fathers killed. Marrine's plan for revenge and peace requires her achieving the Grancrest, and she doesn't want to put Alexis in harm's way, so her only choice is to do it through conquest. Sleeping with Milza and killing Villar and such are things she does because she has to in order to gain the Grancrest, not things she wants to do. Later on, both Alexis' reassurance and Theo's successful campaign convince her that she doesn't have to do it all alone, and she joins their side against the true enemy, whom she has been preparing to fight the whole time. The characters forgive her because they understand her motivation. This is literally explained in the show. |

| @OspreyTalon I understand all of that, but I just personally don't think it makes sense for someone like Theo or Siluca to accept what she did. They were friends and protected by Villar and his mages. The way we see Theo, he is not someone who can accept something like that. And then let alone the literal chemical attack on the fortress, that counts as a cowardly war crime? And then Alexis, who couldn't even hurt a fly, he is so naive and good hearted, just accepts her doing all this? Sure, her goal was good, but you just can't excuse villainous acts by having a noble goal in mind. Especially when the show goes out of the way to show Theo mourn villagers in his home country for 3 episodes straight. And MAAAAYBE if they spent time on showing the process I could have taken in, but Villar was murdered, and literally the next episode Theo meets her, and calls her 'gentle'. like what??? |

| @OspreyTalon I mean, this will be an extreme example, but that is like saying Saddam Hussein is a tragic villain, set up by USA. His goal was to protect his people, and him doing a chemical attack on Halabja can be forgiven? I mean, that's what Marine did, but given the circumstances of the other side wanting to team up with her to reach her goals, I would say its even worse in context. |

| upon further thinking, I remembered the reasoning for disliking it so much when I watched it. Nevermind the storytelling quality (it was awful by itself), the plot was absurd. It made sense in a way, in that it somehow accomplished the thing it set out to do, but that thing was nonsensical. The complete inversion of Marine and Alexis' characters, giving both of them caricatures of the opposite sex as characters. She's borderline barbarian and aggressive, always opting to use force and flex power, discarding all virtue, while he's, simply put, a complete effeminate homosexual. Getting past the very concept of starting a war, which should be illogical enough, she also makes the stupidest choices, like get a bunch of actual foreigner barbarians to fight your war, and get them to do so by... drum roll... bitching yourself out to their leader. Ah yes, test your resolve by ditching your dignity and self worth, letting yourself be fucked by this dude who's not going to be your king or consort or anything, literally a cock warmup. This is how a woman pretending to be a man acts. If I was her retainer I'd be like "can I get some of that? I also want to make sure you're worth working for". Right then and there, the confidence and respect the people have for their queen would vanish. The funniest thing, and what I was actually expecting to happen, would've been if the dude actually betrayed her to save his own skin. It's what would've made the most sense. But the outcome was predetermined to be what it was, and all that happened in between wasn't meant to make sense or be congruent, but to add to her idiotic tragedy. |

It's not my fault that your profile is stereotypical of a ragebaiter starting off this thread. That you also stated you wanted to "share your pain" otherwise vent the complaints you had for this show. "So why engage with it?" vent all you want about it. The show also left a sour taste in my mouth but I think there are worse shows than this. Instead of a emotionally charged 3/10 for the high points this show does have in the first half that I gave a 7/10. But again how someone rates 1/10 for AoT even though it's critically acclaimed that I agree with. Gives different standards that more than likely we won't see eye to eye on each other's scores being the way they are. Also I use Reddit as an example, as another forum site. Since its the biggest forum site (even more so than MAL) if you want to say "you're comparing apples to oranges" of discourse. Same thing also happened for the live action of Snow White movie (that flopped) over it's controversies as well. Towards trying to single us out, on MAL for being bad actors against your complaints. |

| @IhnalakoKaina You make a good point, the role inversion was a bit weird and didn't really serve any purpose either. And yes, all her actions were stupid, starting the war, committing war crime after war crime... and then the good guys just ignored all that and we get a happy ending. This is literally like if Cersei was forgiven by the Starks, and then Jon Snow and Sansa and co. go to her wedding being all friendly about it. But alas Game of Thrones (the book) has good writing, and grancrest senki did not. |

I saw this show years ago. I don't remember anything about it, except for how much I hated that bitch.
| @Codyics Based! She single-handledly ruined this story imo. Her, and the way all the other characters were treating her. |

Sounds to me like you enjoeyd something and your inability to simply overlook some minor flaws not only soured but ruined the whole thing for you then^^
I get being passionate or getting into stuff like this. That's fine.
But sometimes it's not good/helpful to be this butthurt about fictional characters.
Suspend your disbelief a bit :)
I think if you do you will have a much better time, watching cartoons, than you're having right now.

| @Merve2Love You are right, and I wish I could ignore the negatives, but sometimes it's just not possible. And I would not say this was a minor flaw, her character and her plotline was quite a big part of the story. Especially when there are examples out there of similar shows, focusing on war, politics etc. that do have much better writing, then it becomes frustrating to see something with good potential fumble this hard (e.g: Game of Thrones, Code Geass just to name a few.) |

Gives different standards that more than likely we won't see eye to eye on each other's scores being the way they are.

it's quite annoying, any other fans -video games, tv shows, fantasy books- can take and engage in proper discussions even if their favourites are talked about in a negative light, because they don't take it as a personal insult...because it is not, but some of the replies here make it look like I talked bad about their family

Also not true, their was controversies for video games of Concord (biggest financial cancellation disaster for Sony) and Highguard (Wildlight Entertainment studio shutting down after releasing another generic live service hero shooter) with Reddit moderators removing posts that were critical of the game on their threads.

Gives different standards that more than likely we won't see eye to eye on each other's scores being the way they are. Well, ratings are subjective, there is no objectivity in entertainment. So aot being critically acclaimed really doesn't mean anything. That aside, there are quite a lot of people who hate how it ended, so I wouldn't really say it is loved by most. Some people like it, good for them, but for me it's a 1/10. I am probably harsh, but I am usually skewing a lot toward the lower scores if I could have liked a show but then it really went in the wrong direction. This was the case with grancrest, and also with aot, which was my top 3 favourite stories up until the time skip (first 3 seasons) but then the end took a bigger dive than game of thrones season 8. I am not saying MAL users are like that, I am saying all anime fans -including the ones on reddit, discord, facebook, everywhere. And sure, there are examples of this being the case for video games, tv shows, but from my anecdotal experience it's not so frequent. Maybe you have a different experience, that is completely valid, this is also subjective imo. |

| I'd recommend watching 90's and 2000's shows instead of 'modern' anime. New stuff is created for a mainstream audience - that's not a bad thing, it's just not as niche and special as it used to be. I didn't like Record of Lodoss War , (the show) I've yet to read the novel. Novels tend to be better because they're unrestricted unlike adaptations. It's good to have an opinion. If we all agreed this forum would be so boring. It's good to have a justified response to something, it means it impacted you. Just remember you're going to encounter alot of 'garbage' in this hobby. Remember also to have fun when consuming anime, manga, light novels and visual novels. Try to see the good in everything you consume before critiquing it. It's also sad to see so many users, instead of simply not agreeing, bantering your profile's creation date. This seems to be a non-sequitor and should be ignored. Maybe anime might not be for you, or, you haven't found the right fit yet. Good luck on your journey. |

| @Femboy_Hooters Thanks for your reasonable reply. It is sad indeed that people start looking at profiles, as if that matters at all. It is what it is. I did enjoy the 90s-2000s anime much more, maybe some in the early 2010s as well, I don't think I liked a single anime/manga that came out after 2014, it's just way too focused on popularity and mass production. I kind of quit watching the medium a few years ago, I watched and read a few recently, but can't really get back into it. Mostly just rewatching and discussing stuff I already saw. I should give Lodoss War a try, it does look better than Grancrest at least. |

| Also why in almost every MAL discussions I found, there will be like some people with "thousand of history posts" being wiseass and judgmental while not engaging in the main topic of the post itself and instead going on insulting OP? Like at least give some of your points instead just "hurr durr you are a new account and just being butthurt.." Like geez, so annoying... |
