Hey, I'm glad you liked my review. Thanks for reading!
Wow, reading back, I definitely could have spent another paragraph going into what I meant by "self-aware". There are a lot of shows that try to have their cake and eat it too, being incredibly indulgent in their use of popular tropes, but then making a point of drawing attention to that, acting as if this awareness constituted a subversion that had elevated the material. Think the fanservice episodes of Saekano, and I'm guessing parts of Tomozaki-kun as well, though I haven't seen that. It's a light novelism that is extremely grating if it doesn't have the substance to back it up, and given that Makeine was originally written under a title along the lines of "Am I actually some kind of mob character who shows up next to the runner-up heroine in the final chapter of the story?", I went into it with a lot of trepidation that it was going to be kind of insufferable in that regard.
Basically, I wanted the beginning of my review to come across as really cynical - to match the attitude that I would have had going into the show - so that the contrast would be all the more dramatic when I started showering it with effusive praise. I really wanted to stack the deck against Makeine, to lay out every bias I was bringing with me, all to make a point of just how much it blew me away with its confidence in its execution.
personally i never watched mushoku tensei. xD if it is what i think it is (the isekai with a pervert or something) i probably wont get into it. hehe
