I have not read any proper music themed manga, if you just ignore the two axed mangas in my list. So this was a good addition to kickstart my journey in reading these mangas.

Synopsis is that the mc has a dream to perform in a band. In order to achieve that she buys an electric guitar and joins her school's light music club. Following that are the ups and downs in her musical journey to achieve her dreams.

Now the story is very basic yet somewhat a bit complex. Complex as in a lot of things happen simultaneously in the backdrop. Our mc is a girl ...

Think of Girl Meets Rock as a mixture of Bocchi the Rock's focus on music and self growth, with Skip and Loafer's focus on expansive teen character development, and then throw in some occasional Death Note intrigue shenanigans just for the hell of it. Really, it's a combination that works great to form a grounded and earnest story through the vessel of Japanese rock.

What particularly draws me to Girl Meets Rock is how natural it feels. The MC, Hatono, isn't some born-talented singer and guitarist, and though she works hard to improve, she still doesn't magically grow a beautiful voice and sick guitar skills in ... under a year (as other characters point out). Characters that *are* musically talented often have to wrestle with their egos and ask themselves whether playing music is only about playing it well. There's deep thoughts like that and silly moments all throughout the manga. Meanwhile, Hatono stands out in her pure eagerness to pursue music, even if she stumbles often. It's her genuine 'ray of sunshine' vibe that rubs off on you and inspires other characters to be more genuine.

If side characters getting the spotlight for a few chapters instead of the MC bothers you, then you'll be bugged by this manga. Girl Meets Rock does that often, though that doesn't get in the way of the Hatono's development; rather, it cultivates interesting and well-developed side characters and antagonists that serve well alongside her. Even characters that seem a bit 1 dimensional at first get a peek later on into their history to give them some depth.

Being high schoolers, they all face the expected angst and drama and romance that comes with being teenagers. It's ground that's been tread by countless other mangas, but Girl Meets Rock uses music as a way for characters to be challenged and mature in a way that's realistic for teens, capturing the hardships of becoming older and dealing with the past that many of us have faced or are facing. Not unique, perhaps, but it still makes a well-rounded story.

The songs they play are great, by the way. If you're a fan of Japanese rock, then the song choices of the Girl Meets Rock line up well with the story's beats. If you're unfamiliar with J-rock but still like rock, then you'll probably become a fan through this manga like I did. The manga usually tells you what song the characters are playing, and you can listen along while you read, feeling the characters' emotions with them as the play. I highly recommend that, and it helped bump up my score from an 8 to a 9.

I don't particularly care about a manga's art quality, as long as it's not distractingly bad; in this sense, Girl Meets Rock's art is fine. The main focus is on the story and the characters that live it. Overall, Girl Meets Rock is a consistently good story that features music but has themes that go far beyond that; it inspires you to pursue your passions and make good memories, no matter what skill issues or hardships you think are holding you back.

Girl Meets Rock strums alongside K-on and Bocchi the Rock as another story about four high school girls forming a rock band. In reviewing Girl Meets Rock, comparisons with these two famous manga feel inevitable. But while K-on and Bocchi float through the clouds as idyllic yonkoma featuring pleasant classmates and tea breaks, Girl Meets Rock grounds its characters in all the messy and muddy troubles of teenage angst.

And it's all the better for it. The light music club in Girl Meets Rock is a stage for all these young boys and girls to wrestle through petty jealousy, tenuous friendships, and hormones. Bands break up ... due to unrequited crushes. Bands form because of comically dramatic scheming. From the viewpoint of an adult, most of these conflicts feel silly and overblown. But that's what's great about this manga. It depicts the turmoil of its teenage characters with seriousness, yet also with a sense of maturity and dry humor. The characters trip, stumble, and struggle through drama and their own teenage desires as they come face-to-face with difficulties that they're not yet equipped to handle. In other words, this manga does a wonderful job at capturing youth.

It only makes sense then that Girl Meets Rock features the awkward and novice Hatono as its protagonist. Hatono starts off the series as an incoming high schooler learning how to play guitar for the very first time. As the series progresses, she can't hope to match up to the technical prowess of the other students who have been learning music since they were children, but what sets Hatono apart is her headlong passion and boldness.

There's a scene in the manga where Hatono is goaded into singing by an antagonistic girl with a chip on her shoulder. Feeling insulted, Hatono spontaneously sings "Linda Linda" by The Blue Hearts in a capella. In most other manga, this sort of scene would lead to everyone being blown away by Hatono's raw talent, but that doesn't happen here. Most of the people listening are completely confused and taken aback by this sudden performance, and so Hatono hurries off in embarrassment. But it's these sorts of scenes which show what's special about this manga.

Hatono cringes at her own antics frequently, but she still always gets back on stage because she likes performing. She's a character who starts off the series practicing her guitar with street performances in front of grannies and people walking their dogs. It's no wonder that when Hatono sang "Linda Linda," it's the punk enthusiast side character who feels awe and respect towards Hatono in that moment. Hatono depicts all the raw and clumsy eagerness to muddle through what she wants to do. It's cool, brave, and it's punk rock.

So if you're like me, you'll read through Girl Meets Rock and feel the need to pick up that guitar you've neglected, or sing at the top of your lungs in the shower, or dance in the living room to your favorite tune. It's as good a time as ever.
