Egawa MVP. Get all those cakes, girl.
But yeah I can totally understand why this manga is getting a live action.
The storytelling is good; for a five chapter tankoubon it manages to tell a lot of things, combining the little police things they have to deal with building up Takoi and Shiono's relationship without the story feeling rushed or forced.
The character dynamics are also nice. The fluid and dynamic art definitely helps in setting up the relaxed vibe. And when the story gets serious, the art also knows to slow down, to focus, to let the impact of what's being said sink in.
And it DOES get
...
pretty serious. For a story tagged as comedy this surprisingly goes to a rather tense and serious place.
(Content Warning: Societal homophobia taken seriously)
As much as it hurts to read, I do appreciate that the story dares to explore the social pressure not just of being straight but of having a ‘normal’ life, so to speak. I like how mature Shiono, the ML is, and I also like how hurtful Takoi, the MC, got in his people pleasing tendencies. It’s a nice, realistic facet of characters like him.
If anything I just feel a bit annoyed at the end.
Not about Takoi, per se; while he's being extremely infuriating in his DL-ass behavior, he did SUFFER from his actions to Shiono even if only for a few pages. I do think that the groveling works for his character in that for once he doesn’t put a cheery mask and expresses his genuine feelings.
If anything I'm more pissed off that the rest of the crowd, the societal pressure that drives Takoi to hurt Shiono, got away scot-free without so much as an admonishment. So many heteronormative pressure, and it doesn’t get addressed.
Maybe it'd be too farfetched to have them being overtly supportive of Takoi and Shiono's relationship, but I would have appreciated an apology from them. an "Well even if Takoi's gay it doesn't change anything". Or at least just a "hey maybe we're being too much"... but no. The narrative just ...pushes them under the rug.
It’s a bit annoying for a story this good.
