Synopsis

Kouhei Sugihara lives in a world of total isolation due to him being hard-of-hearing. However, when the loud and boisterous Taichi Sagawa comes into his life, Kouhei discovers that Taichi's voice alone shines as bright as the sun. Easily misunderstood by most people, Taichi is taken aback when Kouhei notices his good-natured personality. Taichi's valiant personality urges Kouhei to demand more for himself, pushing him into the lively world that he had always yearned to live in. Through this, Taichi helps Kouhei find a community of people who are willing to listen and understand, though they might have to repeat themselves more than once. Through the ups and downs of living in two very different worlds, Taichi and Kouhei find a connection that transcends all barriers and runs deeper than just a regular friendship.

Hidamari ga Kikoeru is a touching story about loneliness, self-respect, and finding a bond through the commonalities that we all share as people.

Hidamari ga Kikoeru was adapted to a live-action film on June 24, 2017.

The series was published in English as I Hear the Sunspot by One Peace Books on August 15, 2017. It was also published in Polish by Dango on August 25, 2016 and in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones in 2016.

This will be a short review.

If you typically avoid Boys Love (BL) titles due to genre conventions like coercive power dynamics and sexual harassment, I Hear The Sunspot is surprisingly different. This is an emotionally grounded short romance story with tension involving social and disability themes. There is no coercion, no romance between an adult and child characters, no perverted gag humor or sexual fanservice. Beyond the romance, it covers miscommunications, bullying, trauma, ableism and disability advocacy. Characters set boundaries, make mistakes that alter their relationship dynamics, and gradually adapt to eachother. There is no wish fulfillment, and no exaggerated archetypes or melodrama.

This story should have ended with the first volume (the first 6 chapters). It treated the subject of disabiity in a realistic and respectful manner, showed likable characters growing closer in a way that felt natural, and skillfully avoided problematic tropes.

I would recommended not reading past that point. Chapter 6 is where the story was originally meant to end, with just a bare hint that the characters would grow to develop romantic feelings. But because it was serialized in a BL magazine, the author was told to add more chapters and ramp up the romance content. From that point on, every scene feels forced. ...

PROS:

1. It is a story about hard-of-hearing and deaf people. This shows their struggle in life.

2. This is the first volume of the trilogy, but since there are different subtitles, they got listed individually on MAL.
