Vinland Saga (Manga) add
Usually I'll leave the score at the end, but I'll start with this. i gave this a 9/10, and really wish I could give this a 10... but I can't for a big reason... and it's the one thing I'll discuss.

But this reason may be considered a "spoilers".. Note, this is not what happens, but rather how the manga goes, and I think it's CRITICAL to understand this part to decide if this is the manga for you. The simple version of this is, how the manga starts is NOT how the manga actually is.

With that said, the big thing ...

This was more gundam with most of the same positives and negatives. A heavy focus on "Space wizards" which is it's weakest part. However the positive is FAR more mobile suits including the absolutely awesome Qubeley. Since so much of this series focused on Cyber newtypes, and yet the anime is SO afraid to define what a new type is because they might want to change that definition later to give some new space power... that is a little annoying.

But I'll give it a point higher for one important reason... In the original series Earth federation good, Zeon Bad... ...

This is a good anime, but it's a flawed anime in 2025... The animation is old as hell, it feels like a saturday morning cartoon show at the beginning, and it's definitely a feeling that there's lighter production on this then there should be.

At the same time, I can't deny it's still a really solid series, with a few mis-steps. Amuro Ray the "Boy who pilots a gundam" feels really out of place, but what's odd is in the future series this is just normalized. I feel like more could have been made about his age, but really everyone is ...

A very simple and solid series. Guy finds a Dangerous car to drive (the Devil Z). He buys it and drives it, and rather than having some supernatural story or anything else, it's mostly about.... people who drive and tune cars. This is a series that is excellent but also "nothing happens". Just new people have a love of a car, express it, discuss why they drive (or why they are leaving driving) and then ... they drive.

There's no big races... at least not structured races, there's no big events. There is a relationship in the series ...

Hokuto no Ken (Manga) add
I really like a lot of this manga. It's a overly strong powerful character who doesn't constantly have training montages to fight. He's a silent hero, with power who... now get this.. KILLS people? I know wow crazy right?

Yes this was written before the "no murder" idea came to shonen, but still this feels so refreshing.

I would have given this series a 9 if it was the first and second arc... However... there's 245 chapters in there. I'd say this book reaches the peek around chapter 130... Maybe even is still good enough around 160. ...

GTO is an epic manga, but you know Shonan Junai Gumi is just as good. Rather than follow Onizuka as a Great Teacher, we see Onizuka as a punk, a high schooler who hangs out with his pal Ryuji. Both of these characters are great, though the series does loose a step at a few points when Ryuji grows up a bit.

That being said, Onizuka and Ryuji, and honestly many characters are mega pervs... and oddly it works here. Onizuka hitting on a teacher, is different then Onizuka AS a teacher hitting on students. I think it's clear why. ...

Kakegurui (Manga) add
Preliminary (110/? chp)
Maybe I'm a simple guy, but I've rather enjoyed Kakegurui, and just ate this series up.

Allow me to post my new and updated rubric when it comes to gambling Manga, that'll help you understand what I like and what I don't care about.

A. Are there interesting games? This is the most basic request, but essentially the bets have to be on SOMETHING interesting. Most of the gambling manga's end up going to a Rock Paper Scissors game, such as Kakegurui. But then use a twist on it (limited of each choice, random selection, poker). And in ...

GTO (Manga) add
Mixed Feelings
I ran into GTO the first time when I was a young man in the late 90s and 2000, and it became one of my favorite series, it was funny, and had a great main character. Basically everything about this series as enjoyable.

And then in 2024, I started reading GTO again. Oh boy.

Now listen, I have often defended art of all forms to say that looking at stuff in a 2024-2025 view is relatively incorrect. You can dislike something that doesn't fit with the morals of today, but to not acknowledge that people's opinions have changed and it ...

So I guess Kaiji is just a horrible person. But that makes him an interesting character.

This is the third series, and once again Kaiji is penniless and yet roped in a major high stakes game, which he will struggle to get out of.

What's different this time around is Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji focuses on a single game, rather than a series. It's impressive that for 131 chapters, this manga focuses on only a single game, and in fact a single day. Kaiji runs into his old friends who tell him about a underground casino owner who likes to ...

One Outs (Manga) add
I picked this up because I enjoyed Liar's Game, and found an even better Manga here.

One Outs is about a pitcher, Tokuchi who plays a game of "One Outs" to gamble. If he gets an out he wins, and if the player can get a hit, the player wins. This is where the manga starts. It's an interesting premise, but before long Tokuchi is pulled into the major leagues through a situation and gets a unique contract.

Tokuchi is a gambler, so the contract he proposes is that he earns money for every out he gets, and every run he gives ...
